On
June 12, 2018, I held a historic summit with Chairman Kim Jong Un
of North Korea. One of the outcomes of this bilateral meeting was
the recovery and repatriation of the remains of Americans who were
prisoners of war or missing in action. Yesterday, Vice President
Mike Pence oversaw the return of the remains of fallen American
service members to American soil.
The
United States owes a profound debt of gratitude to those brave
Americans who gave their lives in service to their country. It is
a solemn obligation of the United States Government to ensure that
the remains are handled with dignity and properly accounted for so
their families receive them in an honorable manner. Yesterday’s
actions represent a significant first step to recommence the
repatriation of remains from North Korea and to resume field
operations in North Korea to search for the estimated 5,300
Americans who have not yet returned home.

and I pray that yesterday's developments will finally provide the
Gold Star Families of these courageous soldiers with peace and
comfort. May God bless and continue to watch over our Nation’s
Armed Forces.
