“Hiding
in plain sight in a suburb of St. Louis is one of the great
success stories of President Donald J. Trump’s tough trade
policies,” National Trade Council Director Peter Navarro writes.
“This is the rebirth of the Granite City steelworks, idled in
2015 — along with about 2,000 steelworkers — under a drowning
flood of subsidized foreign imports.”
“U.S.
Steel is back,” President Trump said in Granite City today.
“In
what President Donald Trump called ‘a very big day for free and
fair trade,’ he and the leader of the European Union agreed
Wednesday to work to end tariffs on nonautomotive products,”
Fred Lucas reports for The
Daily Signal. “Trump said the U.S. and EU would work
to reduce trade barriers and increase trade on chemicals,
pharmaceuticals, medical products, and soybeans.”
In
USA Today, Agriculture
Secretary Sonny Perdue explains the importance of
President Trump’s stand for American trade. “In the Olympics,
if opposing athletes continuously broke the rules while the
officials let them get away with it, American fans would want our
coaches to raise a fuss,” the Secretary writes. “That’s what
has been happening in the arena of international trade, and
President Donald Trump is rightly calling out our competitors for
unfair play.”
“President
Trump threatened Turkey with sanctions unless it releases detained
U.S. pastor Andrew Brunson, who has been held for nearly two
years,” Jessica Donati reports in The
Wall Street Journal. “The United States will impose
large sanctions on Turkey for their long time detainment of Pastor
Andrew Brunson, a great Christian, family man and wonderful human
being,” the President wrote on Twitter.
“Judge Kavanaugh is an
outstanding nominee, and the single most qualified person in the
country to serve on the United States Supreme Court,”
Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant writes in the Clarion-Ledger.
“The President promised to select a candidate who would apply
the law and rely on the Constitution in order to deliver justice.
President Trump kept that promise.” |

Earlier this Morning
President
Donald J. Trump announced second-quarter GDP growth of 4.1
percent—putting America on track to hit its highest annual
average growth rate in more than a decade.
U.S. Steel is back
“Hiding
in plain sight in a suburb of St. Louis is one of the great
success stories of President Donald J. Trump’s tough trade
policies,” National Trade Council Director Peter
Navarro says. “This is the rebirth of the Granite City
steelworks, idled in 2015 — along with about 2,000 steelworkers
— under a drowning flood of subsidized foreign imports.”
President
Trump visited Granite City yesterday, where U.S. Steel is
restarting its blast furnaces and putting hundreds of Americans
back to work. “Our steel towns became ghost towns. More than
70,000 hardworking Americans lost their jobs, their hope, and
their way of life,” President Trump told workers in Illinois.
“After years of shutdowns and cutbacks, today the blast furnace
here in Granite City is blazing bright.”
It’s
never been a better time to enter the American workforce. For
the first time on record, “there are more job openings in the
economy today than there are people looking for jobs,” Labor
Secretary Alex Acosta told students during a visit with President
Trump to Northeast Iowa Community College. That statistic is
crucial for Americans on welfare, as work programs offer the
surest pathway out of poverty.
Something to share: ‘Made in America’ from all 50 states
President
Trump hosted his second “Made in America” showcase at the
White House this week. Companies large and small joined the
celebration on the South Lawn—“products made with American
heart, American sweat, and American pride,” the President said.
We need to hear the stories of persecution
“Nations
that reject religious freedom breed radicalism and resentment
in their citizens,” Vice President Mike Pence said at the
first-ever Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom yesterday in
Washington, D.C. “They sow the seeds of violence within their
borders—violence that often spills over into their neighbors and
across the world.”
To
advance the cause of religious freedom, America needs partners
the world over. So this week, the State Department brought
together religious leaders, survivors of religious persecution,
and delegations from foreign governments for this inaugural
ministerial.
“We
need to hear the stories of those persecuted, tortured,
falsely imprisoned, and killed for their faith,” Secretary of
State Mike Pompeo says. “We can honor
their sacrifices by preventing these atrocities from happening
again.”

The Day Ahead
• President
Donald J. Trump and Ivanka Trump visit Iowa, where they will lead

live at 12:30 p.m. ET.
• The
President then travels to Granite City, Illinois, where he will
celebrate the expected return of 800 American steel jobs. Watch

A major bipartisan win in Congress
Republicans
and Democrats came together yesterday to deliver a
signature piece of President Trump’s workforce agenda:
reauthorization of the Perkins Career and Technical Education
Act. For years Congress has tried unsuccessfully to
modernize the program, which will help more than 11 million
students and workers with technical and vocational education.
President
Trump had urged Congress to act. “Congress should
reauthorize #PerkinsCTE and ensure the American workforce remains
stronger than EVER!” the President tweeted this week. The
White House, led by Ivanka Trump, was closely involved in
shepherding the legislation on Capitol Hill.
It’s
been a flagship month for workers, with America in the midst
of its longest streak of uninterrupted job growth ever recorded.
Last week, President Trump launched the National Council for the
American Worker, which will focus on retraining efforts to make
sure every citizen can take full advantage of this historic jobs
boom.
Zero tariffs, zero barriers, and zero subsidies
As
a candidate, Donald Trump promised to make America a much
tougher negotiator on the world stage. “We have the worst trade
deals in the history of the world. We gave away our country, but
we’re taking it back for our workers,” the President said last
month in Minnesota.
Yesterday,
the President’s tough stance paid off with a dramatic
win, especially for America’s farmers. Standing alongside
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, President Trump
announced that “we agreed today, first of all, to work together
toward zero tariffs, zero non-tariff barriers, and zero subsidies
on non-auto industrial goods,” a move that “will open markets
for farmers and workers.”
The
importance can’t be overstated. The European Union’s $1
trillion trade flow with the United States is the largest economic
relationship in the world. Together, America and the EU account
for 830 million citizens and more than half of the world’s GDP.
“If we team up, we can make our planet a better, more secure,
and more prosperous place,” President Trump said.

“President
Trump announced Wednesday that he has secured major trade
concessions from European Union officials,” Adam Shaw reports
for Fox News. “Both sides agreed to work toward the goal of
‘zero’ tariffs and subsidies on non-auto industrial goods, and
to ‘resolve’ recent tariffs that both sides have imposed,”
Shaw writes.
“This
was a very big day for free and fair trade,” President Trump
said alongside European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.
The
Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act “unanimously
passed the House on Wednesday afternoon after passing the Senate
on Monday. It is now headed to President Trump’s desk,” Ali
Breland and Juliegrace Brufke report for The
Hill. The bill, which was supported by Advisor to the
President Ivanka Trump, is “aimed at bolstering skills training
for technical jobs in various industries.”
In
USA Today, Richard
Burkhauser of the White House Council of Economic Advisers (CEA)
writes that the best way to escape poverty is through work—and
the CEA has the research to back it up. “Well designed work
programs are not punishment, they're investments in welfare
recipients,” Burkhauser says.
“More
than a million jobs have been created since the passage of the Tax
Cuts and Jobs Act,” Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) writes in The
Cincinnati Enquirer. “President Trump said in his
Inaugural Address, ‘the forgotten men and women of our country
are being forgotten no longer,’ and the policy results of the
past 18 months are showing that to be true.”
“By
nominating Judge Brett Kavanaugh, President Trump has chosen a
nominee with impeccable qualifications who falls squarely within
the mainstream of American legal thought and interpretation,”
Arkansas Lt. Governor of Tim Griffin writes in Arkansas
Online. Judge Kavanaugh’s “intellect, experience,
and commitment to the Constitution make him the ideal addition to
the Supreme Court.”
In The
Wall Street Journal, former CKE Restaurants CEO Andy
Puzder breaks down “the left’s latest economic talking point”:
That Americans have too many jobs. “The difficulty will lie in
attempting to explain away the benefits of economic growth for
American workers,” Puzder says. |

Thank
you for taking the time to send me your thoughts and suggestions.
Yesterday,
I was honored to speak
at the National Convention for the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW)
of the United States in Kansas City.
As
President, I am committed to honoring the brave men and women of
our Armed Forces by providing them with the resources they were
promised. Robert Wilkie, confirmed
by the Senate on Monday as the next Secretary of the
Department of Veteran Affairs, shares that same commitment.
Together,
we will implement initiatives that ensure our Nation’s veterans
receive the care they deserve. Recently, I signed into law the VA
MISSION Act of 2018. This important legislation provides $5.2
billion in funding for the Veterans Choice program and will
consolidate care programs, streamline essential resources, remove
barriers to telemedicine and mobile deployment teams, and create
new initiatives to build on and improve veterans’ care.
Thank
you again for your email.
Sincerely,
Donald Trump |
